1. Who directed Return of the Jedi?
Richard Marquand
Marquand was a Welsh director whose thriller Eye of the Needle had impressed Lucas, who stayed close at hand throughout the shoot. David Lynch had turned the job down to make Dune, and Irvin Kershner, who directed The Empire Strikes Back, did not return.
2. Who is holding Han Solo at the start?
Jabba the Hutt
Han has been hanging on the wall of Jabba's palace on Tatooine, still frozen in carbonite, since Boba Fett delivered him at the end of Empire. Jabba himself was a huge puppet with several operators crammed inside it and another working the tail.
3. What is the creature beneath Jabba's trapdoor?
A rancor
Luke drops the heavy gate on the rancor's neck, and its keeper is left weeping over the body. The creature was a rod puppet shot at high speed, used after a man in a suit looked exactly like a man in a suit; the wampa is the Hoth snow beast from Empire.
4. What pit creature is meant to eat the prisoners in the desert?
The sarlacc
Boba Fett ends up in it after a half-blind Han knocks his jetpack by accident, and the belch from the pit seemed to settle his fate until later stories dug him out. The 1997 Special Edition gave the sarlacc a beak and tentacles the original cut never had.
5. What identity does Leia use while disguised as a bounty hunter?
Boushh
Leia walks in with Chewbacca as her prisoner and haggles over his price with a live thermal detonator, which earns Jabba's admiration. The disguise lasts long enough to thaw Han before Jabba, who has been watching all along, pulls back the curtain.
6. What color is Luke's new lightsaber blade?
Green
Luke lost his father's blue saber along with his hand on Cloud City, and the new one is his own work. It was blue in early trailers and on some posters; the color changed to green in post-production so the blade would read against the Tatooine sky.
7. Where is the shield generator protecting the new Death Star?
On the forest moon of Endor
The forest moon was shot among the redwoods of Northern California, near Crescent City. The shield has to drop before the fleet can touch the half-built Death Star, which is why Han's strike team goes in first and the fleet is left hanging when it does not.
8. What are the small furry inhabitants of that moon called?
Ewoks
The name Ewok is never said aloud in the film; it appears only in the credits. Lucas had planned to have Wookiees defeat the Empire, then decided Chewbacca had made them too handy with technology and shrank the idea to a tribe fighting with stones and logs.
9. Which droid do the Ewoks mistake for a god?
C-3PO
The Ewoks carry him on a throne and plan to roast his friends in his honor, until Luke uses the Force to lift chair and droid into the air. He later tells them the whole saga so far. Anthony Daniels, inside the suit, is in every Star Wars film.
10. Who plays the Ewok Wicket?
Warwick Davis
Davis was eleven and had been cast as a background Ewok until Kenny Baker, who was meant to play Wicket, fell ill with food poisoning on the day. Lucas later built Willow around him. Baker, who operated R2-D2, plays another Ewok, Paploo, instead.
11. Who plays Emperor Palpatine?
Ian McDiarmid
McDiarmid was in his late thirties, playing an ancient man under heavy prosthetics, and got to play the character young in the prequels. In Empire the Emperor's hologram was another performer with Clive Revill's voice; the 2004 DVD swapped McDiarmid in.
12. Which rebel admiral warns that the battle is a trap?
Admiral Ackbar
Ackbar is a Mon Calamari, a mask worn by puppeteer Tim Rose with the voice of Erik Bauersfeld. His 'It's a trap' is the moment the fleet realizes the Death Star's superlaser already works; Raddus is a Rogue One admiral of the same species.
13. What fast vehicles carry the chase through the forest?
Speeder bikes
The backgrounds were shot by Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown walking slowly through the redwoods with a camera running at a frame or so a second, which plays back as a blur at full speed. The actors were filmed on bikes against bluescreen and dropped in.
14. Who flies the Millennium Falcon during the final space battle?
Lando Calrissian
Han lends him the Falcon once Lando is made a general, with Nien Nunb as copilot, and Lando promises there will not be a scratch on her. The ship loses its round sensor dish inside the Death Star, which is why it has a rectangular one in The Force Awakens.
15. What does Luke learn about Leia on Dagobah?
She is his twin sister
Yoda, dying, confirms there is another Skywalker, and Obi-Wan's ghost fills in the rest: the twins were separated at birth to hide them from Vader. Luke tells Leia on Endor the night before the battle, and she says she has somehow always known.
